Tucker Carlson claims he was detained by Israeli authorities at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport on Wednesday, just hours after sitting down with U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee.
Carlson, who has become the right’s most prominent Israel critic, told the Daily Mail that airport security took his team’s passports and hauled his executive producer into a side room for questioning.
“Men who identified themselves as airport security took our passports, hauled our executive producer into a side room and then demanded to know what we spoke to Ambassador Huckabee about,” Carlson said. “It was bizarre. We’re now out of the country.”
Two sources familiar with the matter told the Daily Mail that Israeli officials initially didn’t plan to let Carlson into the country at all.
The U.S. Embassy in Israel denied Carlson’s account, claiming he “received the same passport control questions” as other visitors. Sure.
The timing is notable. The same day, reports emerged that Trump had asked Carlson and other MAGA voices to “turn down the temperature” on their criticism of Israel—a rift that’s been brewing for months over what some in Trump’s base see as America’s excessive deference to Israeli interests.
Carlson hasn’t been shy about his frustrations. Back in September, he said, “Bibi Netanyahu is running around the Middle East telling people ‘I control the United States.’ I’m an American. It’s too humiliating. I can’t handle that. And I shouldn’t have to put up with that.”
Whether Carlson was actually detained or just got the standard treatment depends on who you believe. What’s undeniable is that the MAGA movement’s once-unified support for Israel is fracturing—and Carlson is at the center of the split.
