Trump: ‘I GUESS’ Americans Should Worry About Attack on U.S. Soil

    Published on

President Donald Trump was asked point blank whether Americans should worry about Iran attacking them at home, and his response was: “I guess.”

In a new Time cover story titled “Trump’s War,” the president was pressed on whether it’s reasonable for Americans to fear retaliation on U.S. soil as the military conflict with Iran escalates.

“But I think they’re worried about that all the time,” Trump continued. “We think about it all the time. We plan for it. But yeah, you know, we expect some things.”

Then came the kicker: “Like I said, some people will die. When you go to war, some people will die.”

This is the commander-in-chief casually acknowledging that American civilians might be killed at home as a consequence of his war—and essentially shrugging about it.

The interview comes just days after six U.S. service members were killed in a retaliatory drone strike following the joint U.S.-Israel attack on Iran. The Pentagon identified the fallen soldiers, including Sgt. Declan J. Coady, 20, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Maj. Jeffrey R. O’Brien, 45, of Indianola, Iowa.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in the conflict as of Wednesday, according to reports from the Iranian Red Crescent Society, with “153 affected counties” requiring emergency response teams.

The Time story also dropped four days after a mass shooting in Austin, Texas that the FBI is investigating as a potential act of terrorism. The 53-year-old gunman, Ndiaga Diagne, was reportedly wearing a sweatshirt that said “Property of Allah” over a shirt with the Iranian flag on it when he opened fire at a bar, killing three and injuring 14.

“There were indicators on the subject and then his vehicle that indicate a potential nexus to terrorism,” FBI San Antonio Acting Special Agent in Charge Alex Doran said at a press conference.

So to recap: we’re in an escalating war, over a thousand people are dead, U.S. troops are dying in retaliatory strikes, a potential terror attack just hit Texas, and the president’s message to Americans worried about being next is “I guess” and “some people will die.”
