Minnesota Man impersonates FBI agent in bid to FREE Luigi Mangione from jail

    Published on

A Minnesota man was arrested this week after allegedly impersonating an FBI agent in an apparent attempt to secure the release of accused killer Luigi Mangione from a federal jail in New York.

The charges, detailed in a federal court complaint unsealed Thursday, stem from the man showing up at a Brooklyn detention center claiming he had a judge-signed court order to free Mangione, according to court records and a law enforcement source cited by NBC News.

THE DETAILS: Authorities say Mark Anderson, 35, arrived late Wednesday at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and told prison staff he was an FBI agent authorized to release a specific inmate.

When questioned, Anderson allegedly produced only a Minnesota driver’s license, not federal credentials, and claimed he was “in possession of weapons,” according to the complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

He also allegedly presented and threw multiple documents at Bureau of Prisons officers, which appeared to involve filings against the U.S. Department of Justice.

THE INMATE: The inmate was not named in the charging documents, but a law enforcement source identified him as Luigi Mangione, who has been escorted into Manhattan court in connection with a high-profile homicide case.

THE SEARCH: Officers searched Anderson’s backpack and found a barbecue fork and a round steel blade resembling a pizza cutter, according to the complaint.

    No firearms were recovered.

WHAT ELSE WE KNOW: A law enforcement source told NBC News that Anderson had traveled to New York for a job opportunity that fell through and had recently been working at a pizzeria.

THE CONTEXT: The bizarre episode underscores ongoing security concerns at federal facilities and highlights how easily law enforcement authority can be falsely claimed — a problem critics say has worsened in an era where extremist conspiracy theories and anti-government grievances are routinely amplified.

WHAT’S NEXT: Anderson faces federal charges for impersonating a law enforcement officer. Mangione remains in custody.
