Jill Biden’s Ex-Husband Charged With Murdering His Wife in Delaware

    Published on

Former First Lady Jill Biden’s ex-husband has been charged with murdering his current wife at their Delaware home, according to the Associated Press.

William Stevenson, 77, was arrested Monday on first-degree murder charges for allegedly killing Linda Stevenson, 64, on December 28 during what police described as a domestic dispute.

THE DETAILS: Police responded to the Wilmington home after 11 p.m. and found Linda Stevenson unresponsive in the living room. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful. Stevenson remains in jail after failing to post $500,000 bail. He was charged through a grand jury indictment following a weekslong investigation by Delaware Department of Justice detectives.

William Stevenson was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975. He founded a popular music venue in Newark, Delaware called the Stone Balloon in the early 1970s. Jill Biden went on to marry then-Senator Joe Biden in 1977.

Linda Stevenson ran a bookkeeping business and was described in her obituary as a family-oriented mother and grandmother and Philadelphia Eagles fan. Notably, the obituary does not mention her husband.

OF COURSE: Stevenson has publicly attacked his famous ex-wife before. In a 2024 interview with the conservative outlet Newsmax, he criticized Jill Biden and described their divorce as contentious, calling her “bitter” and “nasty.”

Jill Biden declined to comment on the charges through a spokesperson. It was not immediately clear if Stevenson has legal representation.

ZOOM OUT: A sign reading “Justice for Linda” has been placed in a yard near the Stevenson home, according to AP photos from the scene. Domestic violence remains a leading cause of death for women in the United States, with an average of more than three women killed by intimate partners every day.
