Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost says he was punched in the face by a Trump supporter who hurled racist remarks at him while attending the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
The 29-year-old Florida congressman announced the assault on X Saturday, identifying his attacker as Christian Joel Young, who was arrested for the attack.
THE DETAILS: Frost, who made history in 2022 as the first Gen Z member of Congress, was targeted with both physical violence and racist language at one of the most prominent cultural events in the country. The assault took place at the Sundance Film Festival, the renowned independent film showcase held annually in Park City, Utah.
Young was taken into custody following the incident.
WHY IT MATTERS: The attack on Frost—a Black, Afro-Latino congressman—represents yet another instance of political violence in an increasingly hostile climate. Frost has been an outspoken progressive voice in Congress, particularly on gun violence prevention, having previously worked as a national organizing director for March for Our Lives.
The incident comes as political violence and threats against elected officials have surged in recent years, with Democratic lawmakers and officials of color facing disproportionate targeting. The fact that this happened at a public cultural event, not a political rally, underscores how normalized such aggression has become.
BOTTOM LINE: A sitting member of Congress can’t attend a film festival without being physically attacked by a Trump supporter spewing racist abuse. That’s where we are now.
