Nothing says “peace on earth, goodwill toward men” quite like the President of the United States calling half the country “Radical Left Scum” on Christmas morning.
Donald Trump posted his annual holiday rage-tweet on Wednesday, continuing a tradition that would make even the Grinch say “maybe dial it back a notch.”
WHAT’S GOING ON: “Merry Christmas to all, including the Radical Left Scum that is doing everything possible to destroy our Country, but are failing badly,” Trump wrote on social media.
Last year it was “radical Left Lunatics.” In 2023, he raged at the “evil” and “sick” “THUGS” in the Biden administration. The man really commits to his Christmas character work.
THE DETAILS: After the name-calling, Trump launched into a greatest-hits list of claims: record stock market, lowest crime in decades, “No Inflation,” 4.3 GDP growth.
While some of these claims check out—the stock market has hit records and murder rates have declined—the overall message was less “tidings of comfort and joy” and more “unhinged political rally in your grandmother’s living room.”
OF COURSE: This is extremely on-brand. The man who campaigned on being a Christian warrior for the faithful has spent every single Christmas of his political career using the holiday as an opportunity to attack his perceived enemies.
As one observer noted: “What would Jesus do? Cause I’m sure it isn’t this.”
THE BOTTOM LINE: The responses basically wrote themselves. “Nothing more Christian than to be a hateful wretched fuck on Jesus’s birthday! Representing the faith well Mr. President!” wrote one commenter.
Another: “Not sure I’m getting ‘Merry Christmas’ vibes here.” Perhaps the most telling reaction: “I always have to click the profile to make sure this is the real account and this is a real post.”
When people can’t tell if the President’s actual words are parody, that’s not a communication success—that’s a symptom. Merry Christmas, indeed.
