New York City just posted its safest seven months in recorded history — and it’s not an accident. It’s the direct result of a policy shift most of the coverage has missed.
Mamdani created NYC’s first-ever Office of Community Safety, fulfilling a campaign promise to build public safety around prevention and community-based solutions rather than responding only after a crisis occurs.
Mamdani has been consistent on this point: NYPD officers shouldn’t be the default response to a mental health crisis. Officers are stretched thin, they’re not trained as crisis clinicians, and sending an armed officer to a psychiatric emergency does not make anyone safer. That’s a job for a trained mental health professional — and every call redirected to one is time NYPD gets back to focus on actual crime.
That thinking is now built into city government. Renita Francois was appointed Deputy Mayor for Community Safety to unify violence prevention, mental health response, hate crime prevention, and victim services — programs that used to operate separately across different agencies.
The numbers
Major crime is down 12.7% citywide in July compared to the same month last year, with declines across every category and every borough. It’s the fewest shootings, shooting victims, and murders recorded for the first seven months of any year. Public housing had its safest seven-month stretch on record. The Bronx saw the largest decrease of any borough, at 12.5%. Retail theft declined 9.2%.
Addressing the obvious pushback
Critics will point out — accurately — that shootings and murders were already declining before Mamdani took office, a trend that started under the previous administration as the city continued to recover from pandemic-era spikes. That’s true, and worth saying plainly rather than pretending otherwise.
What’s changed since January isn’t the existence of a downward trend — it’s the mechanism behind it.
The Office of Community Safety didn’t exist under any previous mayor. The mental-health-response redirection didn’t exist under any previous mayor. And the July numbers reflect declines that occurred on Mamdani’s watch, using an approach no prior administration tried. Crime going down is not new. A mayor building permanent infrastructure to keep it down, is.
The takeaway
None of this happened despite Mamdani’s approach — the specific declines in the categories his office targets are happening alongside a structural change no other mayor made.
The data shows Mamdani’s violence prevention and mental health outreach efforts are far more effective at reducing crime than decades of previous mayors relying solely on the NYPD.
Critics love to say Mamdani had nothing to do with it. They’re skipping over the part where he built an entirely new office to deliver exactly these results.
None of this happened by accident, and it didn’t happen despite Mamdani’s approach — it happened because of it.
