Trump Admin ARRESTS Don Lemon for Doing Journalism

    Published on

WHAT’S GOING ON: Federal agents just arrested journalist Don Lemon in Los Angeles—while he was covering the Grammys—for allegedly recording protesters at a Minnesota church service nearly two weeks ago. His crime? Documenting an anti-immigration enforcement demonstration. You know, journalism.

Here’s where it gets wild: a federal magistrate judge already rejected prosecutors’ initial attempt to charge Lemon. So the Trump administration went ahead and arrested him anyway.

THE DETAILS: On January 18, protesters disrupted a church service in Minnesota to speak out against immigration enforcement. Lemon—who’s been a journalist for three decades, including his years at CNN before being fired in 2023—was there with a camera, doing what journalists do. He says he has zero affiliation with the protest organizers. He was simply documenting what was happening.

Fast forward to this week: Lemon’s in LA covering the Grammy Awards when federal agents show up to arrest him. What charges he’s actually facing? Still unclear. That a judge already said no to prosecutors’ first attempt? Apparently irrelevant.

Here is the full statement from Abbe Lowell, Don Lemon’s attorney:

“Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy awards.

Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done. The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable.

Instead of investigating the federal agents who killed two peaceful Minnesota protesters, the Trump Justice Department is devoting its time, attention and resources to this arrest, and that is the real indictment of wrongdoing in this case.

This unprecedented attack on the First Amendment and transparent attempt to distract attention from the many crises facing this administration will not stand.

Don will fight these charges vigorously and thoroughly in court.”

WHY IT MATTERS: This isn’t just about Don Lemon. This is the federal government arresting a journalist for the act of recording a protest. His attorney Abbe Lowell put it plainly: “The First Amendment exists to protect journalists whose role it is to shine light on the truth and hold those in power accountable.”

The timing and theatrics here are not subtle. They grabbed him at a major media event—a clear message to every reporter in the country watching. Document us, and we’ll come for you too.

BOTTOM LINE: A judge said no. They arrested him anyway. Whether you like Don Lemon or not is completely beside the point—when the government starts jailing journalists for covering protests, the free press is under direct attack. This is what authoritarian playbooks look like in practice: criminalize documentation, intimidate witnesses, control the narrative. Lemon says he’ll fight the charges. The rest of us should be paying very close attention to what happens next.
