Oops: Poll Shows Trump Is Accidentally Making China Great Again, Not America

    Published on

Donald Trump’s “America First” agenda is actually making China great again, according to a devastating new global survey. Whoops.

A 21-country poll by the European Council on Foreign Relations found that nearly 26,000 respondents overwhelmingly believe China’s global dominance will only continue to expand rapidly over the next decade—while the United States has become “less feared by its traditional adversaries” and more alienated from its allies.

THE DETAILS: In Europe, where 13 of the surveyed countries are located, only 16 percent of people still consider the U.S. an ally. Meanwhile, 20 percent now view America as a rival or enemy. The report’s authors were blunt: Trump’s actions are “boosting China.”

This is particularly embarrassing given Trump has spent years railing against China for “ripping off our country,” called COVID-19 the “China virus” and “Kung Flu,” and threatened to “destroy” the nation. Instead, his chaos-ridden second term appears to be handing Beijing its biggest geopolitical gift in decades.

OF COURSE: The report suggests Trump has embraced the philosophy that “it is better for a great power to be feared than to be loved.” But here’s the problem—he’s achieving neither. Allies are distancing themselves while adversaries apparently aren’t particularly intimidated either.

The survey paints a picture of an administration alienating friends at record speed. Trump kicked off 2026 by bombing Nigeria—a key U.S. ally—and launching an invasion of Venezuela to kidnap Nicolas Maduro. He’s also threatened Iran, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and even Greenland, which belongs to NATO ally Denmark.

BUT BUT BUT: Surely there must be some check on this increasingly erratic foreign policy? When The New York Times asked Trump last week if anything might constrain his aggressive approach, his answer was chilling: “My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”

WHY IT MATTERS: The rules-based international order that has traditionally benefited U.S. interests for decades is being torched by its supposed chief beneficiary. European leaders now face pressure to be “realistic and daring at the same time” in dealing with Washington—diplomatic code for “figure out how to work around an unreliable superpower.”

So while Trump promised to Make America Great Again, the rest of the world is watching him accidentally Make China Great Again instead. The MAGA crowd might want to workshop that acronym.
