Mamdani Brilliantly Claps Back at Elon Musk

New York City’s incoming mayor just handed Elon Musk a masterclass in how to shut down misinformation with actual facts—and it was beautiful to watch.

Mamdani appointed 31-year EMS veteran Lillian Bonsignore as FDNY commissioner this week — prompting outrage from Elon Musk, who falsely claimed “people will die” because of it.

Bonsignore, who led EMS operations during the COVID-19 crisis, will be the department’s first openly gay commissioner and only the second woman to hold the role.

OF COURSE, this is exactly the kind of appointment that sends the right-wing outrage machine into overdrive—a qualified woman who happens to be LGBTQ+ in a leadership role.

Musk — the billionaire whose business empire relies on government subsidies and union-busting — smeared the appointment as dangerous.

He claimed Mamdani’s appointment would get people killed.

Musk, who apparently didn’t bother to Google the appointee’s credentials before rage-posting, wrote that “People will die because of this. Proven experience matters when lives are at stake.”

Mamdani’s response? Pure receipts. “Experience does matter, which is why I appointed the person who spent more than 30 years at EMS. You know, the workforce that addresses at least 70% of all calls coming into FDNY?” he responded.

BUT BUT BUT: Musk’s critique centers on Bonsignore not being a firefighter. Here’s the thing though: 70% of FDNY calls are EMS-related. Bonsignore has literally spent her entire career doing the work that makes up the majority of the department’s operations.

But sure, the guy who bought a social media platform and proceeded to lose billions knows better than a 30-year emergency services veteran about who should run emergency services.

ZOOM OUT: This isn’t just about one appointment. Musk has been consistently railing against Mamdani alongside Trump administration officials who’ve attacked the democratic socialist mayor-elect’s policy proposals.

The attacks on Bonsignore’s appointment are part of a broader pattern: use “inexperience” or “DEI” as code to delegitimize anyone who doesn’t fit the preferred demographic profile (cis white guy), regardless of their actual qualifications.

BOTTOM LINE: When the world’s richest man with zero emergency services experience lectures a city about who’s qualified to run their fire department, and his “gotcha” is easily debunked with basic arithmetic—maybe the problem isn’t the appointment.

Maybe it’s the billionaire with a posting addiction who thinks owning a platform makes him an expert on everything.
