TOP STORY
Trump and conservatives twist Charlotte tragedy for own political gain

If you've been watching right-wing news lately, a single story has dominated the headlines for days. It's not Jeffrey Epstein's birthday book or the Supreme Court ruling that ICE can stop whomever they want for whatever reason they want.
It's the tragic story of a young, pretty white woman randomly killed by a Black man in the South—a brutal, senseless killing that Trump and conservatives are exploiting to advance their own fascist, racist agenda.
WHAT HAPPENED: Late last month, Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, 23, was fatally stabbed while riding home from work on Charlotte's light rail.
The attacker, Decarlos Brown Jr., 34, had a long criminal record and was arrested on the platform shortly after the attack.
THE REACTION: From Fox News to Donald Trump, conservatives have seized on the murder to push a dystopian narrative that blue cities are war zones, Democrats are soft on crime, and only authoritarian crackdowns can restore order.
Trump and MAGA Republicans are using Zarutska's murder as a political talking point—blaming "Democrat crime policies," pushing for federal police intervention, and suggesting Charlotte is proof of a collapsing America.
The rhetoric has disturbing echoes of historical lynching campaigns—with calls for the death penalty against Brown and mob-justice language that weaponizes racial fear for political gain.
BUT BUT BUT: As typical, they've ignored key facts:
Charlotte's violent crime is actually down this year.
Brown's history represents a failure of the system—but not because of progressive reform. It's decades of inequality, racial exclusion, and a mental healthcare system built to make money, not help people.
The family and community are mourning, not calling for martial law.
HOW THEY'RE SPINNING IT: Nevertheless, the right-wing media machine went into overdrive spinning the story.
Graphic surveillance footage of before and after the crime has flooded right-wing feeds to maximize outrage.
“Commenters” are scapegoating Charlotte's Black Democratic mayor and North Carolina's Democratic governor.
WHY IT MATTERS: This is MAGA politics 101: Exploit tragedy, ignore data, and demonize the opposition.
It's not about justice for Iryna—it's about justifying more cops, more jails, and more fear. The calls for extreme punishment and the racial dynamics at play echo America's darkest chapters of vigilante justice.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Republicans are turning one horrific crime into a billboard for fascist law-and-order policies, all while continuing to ignore the actual root causes of violence—capitalism, poverty, inequality, and systemic neglect.
Brown's next court date is September 19. But the far-right has already rendered its verdict—and it's targeting every city in America.

🗞️ Making News
Israel illegally bombs yet another country with total impunity
Israel has again extended its war of aggression beyond Gaza, launching airstrikes in Qatar’s capital that killed six people—including the son of a senior Hamas leader—during ceasefire talks. The attack, carried out with advance knowledge of the U.S., trampled Qatar’s sovereignty and drew condemnation as “state terrorism” from its prime minister. Full story from The Guardian.
Ghislaine Maxwell’s lawyer admits to secret deal with Trump live on CNN
On CNN, Ghislaine Maxwell’s lawyer openly suggested she cut a secret deal with Trump’s Justice Department to secure a transfer to a lower-security prison. Arthur Aidala said such arrangements always involve a “quid pro quo,” raising questions about what Maxwell provided in exchange. Full story from The Daily Beast.
Godfather of AI warns capitalism will turn his invention into a jobs apocalypse
Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called “Godfather of AI,” says artificial intelligence isn’t about to liberate workers—it’s about to throw millions of them into unemployment. In an interview, he warned that under capitalism, AI will simply funnel profits upward, making the rich richer and the poor poorer. While tech elites pitch band-aids like universal basic income, Hinton argues they can’t fix the deeper problem: a system designed to strip workers of both wages and dignity. Full story from Futurism.
Mamdani opens huge lead in NYC mayor’s race, poll shows
A new Times/Siena poll finds Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani dominating New York City’s mayoral race with 46% support, far ahead of Andrew Cuomo, Curtis Sliwa, and scandal-plagued Eric Adams. Mamdani’s surge is powered by his housing and affordability agenda, including rent freezes and taxing the rich—policies that resonate across racial and class lines. The school shooting industry is worth billions — and it keeps growing
America’s epidemic of school shootings has birthed a $4 billion industry hawking drones, bulletproof whiteboards, metal detectors, and trauma kits to terrified parents and school districts. Yet researchers say there’s little evidence any of it works, while proven solutions—mental health services, gun control, and community support—remain underfunded. Full story from NPR.
🗳️ Yesterday’s poll results
Yesterday we asked, given the release of Epstein’s birthday book which features messages from both Donald Trump and Bill Clinton, should a special prosecutor be appointed to investigate the whole matter? Nearly everyone agreed.

Jmacs voted yes: “Under normal circumstances this would be the expected plan. Today’s authoritarian regime will not allow a special prosecutor to be successful. Alas, the American Experiment is being destroyed internally—as many have predicted.”
V also voted yes: “Something needs to be done. The harm to the survivors is permanent. These were brutal attacks on children who were not of age to give consent. It is criminal behavior. Sweeping this under the rug is giving consent for these behaviors to continue.”
Others disagreed. Strepani voted no and wrote: “Not yet. Anyone appointed by this crowd of lunatics is going to find all republicans innocent as lamb, and anyone and everyone who does not idolize the orange creep guilty of something.”
Bonnie also voted no: “It is both silly and a waste of time and taxpayer's money to keep insisting on following this rabbit hole. Trumpers have shown themselves to be unaffected by Trump's association with Epstein. They also do not care about his previous sexual encounters or he would not be president today.”

IN DEPTH
Here's who else is in the Epstein Birthday book

When the House Oversight committee released Jeffrey Epstein’s 50th birthday book this week, most headlines zeroed in on Donald Trump’s sexually suggestive sketch and Bill Clinton’s flowery letter.
But the 238-page scrapbook—compiled in 2003 by Ghislaine Maxwell—contains far more than two ex-presidents. The entries, a mix of banal birthday wishes and lewd tributes, reveal the disturbing reach of Epstein’s powerful, Zionist social circle.
Also appearing in the book are…
