Elon Musk has gained access to the private data of every federal employee and job applicant, thanks to an illegal server installed at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) by his handpicked operatives, according to a new report from Musk Watch.
The installation of this commercial server, orchestrated by Musk’s so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), grants him and his allies unfettered access to the personal records of millions of federal workers.
This includes highly sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, home addresses, medical histories, salary details, and even disciplinary records.
Journalists Caleb Ecarma and Judd Legum at Musk Watch revealed that a team of young, inexperienced Musk loyalists, some as young as 19, have been given direct access to these records.
These individuals now wield the power to manipulate federal employment data, raising grave concerns about privacy violations and potential political purges.
This unprecedented breach extends to USAJOBS, the government’s official hiring platform, and the Enterprise Human Resources Integration (EHRI) system.
USAJOBS stores applicants’ personal and employment history, while EHRI contains employment records for all federal workers.
Musk’s operatives have already begun using this access to systematically dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices, according to an OPM employee.
Musk’s control doesn’t stop there. His team also has access to onboarding records, job performance evaluations, and even health care management systems used by the federal government. This means they could be in violation of federal health privacy laws such as HIPAA, further endangering employees’ personal security.
A former OPM director described the situation as catastrophic, stating, “What [Musk is] doing will put so many government employees at risk. It’s not at all what the office is intended for. I just can’t believe what I’m seeing.”
Musk’s reckless actions expose federal employees to cybersecurity threats. One OPM employee warned that China and Russia attempt to hack U.S. systems daily, and Musk’s takeover has made sensitive government data even more vulnerable. In fact, an email list created by Musk’s people was already targeted by a flood of spam attacks, signaling immediate security concerns.
Adding to the chaos, many senior government officials have been locked out of key OPM systems, including EHRI. This means they have no way of monitoring what changes Musk’s team is making to federal employment records. With watchdogs locked out, DOGE cronies could be carrying out widespread, irreversible damage to the civil service with no accountability.
