Tennessee Votes to Expel Democratic Lawmakers

Hey guys and happy Friday, I’m Jonathan here at Notice H-Q. Our top story today…

Republicans in the Tennessee state House of Representatives are pushing to expel three Democrats from the chamber for their role in gun control protests last week.

That’s when hundreds of demonstrators flooded into the statehouse to demand stricter gun laws, just days after a tragic school shooting claimed six lives.

Three representatives joined the protests with bullhorns from the house floor, and for that – Republican lawmakers, who hold a super majority in the chamber, moved to expel the three.

The protests have caused a ripple effect as students nationwide staged walkouts for gun safety earlier this week.

Sot: “We are walking out as part of the national students demand action walkout in honor of the lives lost in the Covenant school”

Tennessee Republicans accused the three Democrats of engaging in “disorderly behavior” and bringing dishonor to the house of representatives.

Democrats argue they were exercising their first amendment rights to freedom of speech.

Protesters have continued to gather in Nashville throughout the week, braving the rain to show their support for stricter gun control measures.

Only two Tennessee state representatives have been expelled since the Civil War and both of those cases had overwhelming, bipartisan support.

But the Tennessee Democratic Party is already raising funds to support the three Democrats get their seats back in special elections.

This vote is a clear example of the ongoing debate over gun control and the limits of free speech in the United States.

Headlines

Here’s what else is making news right now…

A new report says Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has for decades accepted luxury trips from a Dallas businessman.

But – the justice never disclosed the trips – as required by federal law. Senate Democrats have called for an investigation.

This man in Australia was arrested… for taking a platypus on a train.

The unlawful taking and keeping of a platypus from the wild is a class 1 offense there. And…

A plane in South Africa was forced to make an emergency landing when the pilot found -no joke – a venomous cobra under his seat.

A real life snakes on a plane… don’t worry, everybody is ok.
