Nikki Haley: “For a strong America, for a proud America, I am running for president of the United States of America!”

Nikki Haley Announces Bid for Presidency

Jonathan: Hey guys and happy Thursday, I’m Jonathan here at Notice HQ in Brooklyn. Well, it’s official.  – Donald Trump finally has some competition for the Republican nomination for president.

Our Washington correspondent Angie has more.

Sound:  “We’re ready, ready to move past the stale ideas and faded names of the past. And we are more than ready for a new generation to lead us into the future.”

Angie: That’s former South Carolina governor and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who officially announced yesterday she’s running for president.

Haley, the daughter of Indian immigrants, was the first woman of color elected governor of South Carolina, and is the first woman of color to seek the Republican nomination. She’s fiscally and socially conservative, meaning she supports fewer rules around business (deregulation),  lower taxes across the board, and has described herself as quote “very pro-life” when it comes to abortion.

She’s also the first person to officially announce she’s running against Donald Trump, who announced his candidacy back in November. The two have a history together. Haley served as U.N. Ambassador for Trump, and scolded the former president after the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6.

Trump hasn’t said anything negative about Haley – at least not yet. Either way, Haley faces an uphill battle to get the nomination. She constantly polls below the top three contenders in the field: Trump, Florida governor Ron DeSantis, and Trump’s Vice President Mike Pence.

Headlines

Jonathan: Here’s what else is making news right now.

The self-avowed white supremacist who killed 10 Black people last year at a Buffalo supermarket now knows his fate. He was sentenced yesterday to life in prison without parole. The oldest person in Congress, California’s 89-year-old senator, Dianne Feinstein, says she’s not running for re-election. She’ll be 92 years old when her term expires in 2024. There’s no age limit on senators or congressmen.

And –  Lady Gaga gave us this first look at her role in the upcoming “Joker” sequel.

She’s believed to be playing Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix. The film’s not coming out until October of 2024.

Teenagers Showcase Their Designs During Fashion Week

Jonathan: One of the biggest fashion events in the world, Fashion Week, just wrapped up yesterday here in New York. Fashion Week is held twice a year in New York City and is an opportunity for brands from all over the world to show off what they plan to sell next.

Sound: runway show with music

You might see a runway show like this and think that these are high fashion designs from established designers, but these clothes were designed by teenagers.

Sound: “It feels, like, really crazy, it feels like a dream. Because this was always a dream for me, so, it’s crazy.”

Jonathan: Through a program called “Industry Clubs” the Boys and Girls Club along with New York based fashion brand, Maison Black, brought five teenagers to fashion week to spend time with established designers and even showcase their own designs.

Sound: “They’ve learned how to do industrial sewing. They’ve learned the inside of this business….these young men have been working with Black male mentors, showing them everything from how do you sketch, how you design, how do you talk to someone at the sample factory making your garment?

Jonathan: Through this mentorship program, the Boys and Girls Club and Maison Black aim to give young designers valuable experiences and a headstart they wouldn’t be able to get on their own.

Sound: “This industry is not so kind to pretty much the Black and brown community, but specifically our Black men.“

Sound: “The goal is for them to be able to take this experience as a launchpad. This isn’t the end for them.”

Jonathan: When asked what he liked about fashion, 17 year old Carlos Pearson said this:

Sound: “I feel like it’s a different way to express yourself and whatever emotion you feel you can just express yourself through fashion, so it never stops. So, I like that.”

Conclusion

Jonathan: That’s it for today but you can learn more about Nikki Haley, her views on the issues and her background on our website, noticenews.com. I’ll be back tomorrow with more from us, Notice News.
