Introduction

Sound: Sheriff: “We want to know, we want to know how something this awful can happen.”

Jonathan: At least 11 people are dead after a gunman opened fire in southern California over the weekend. We have the latest on the ongoing investigation as to why this happened.

And – some good news about a beloved Marvel star.

Those stories and more today on Notice News.

Mass Shooting Rocks California Community

Jonathan: Hey guys, it’s Jonathan here at Notice HQ in Brooklyn. The big news right now is out in southern California, where, on Saturday night, a gunman opened fire at this ballroom dance studio just east of LA. At least 11 people were killed and 10 others were injured.

The gunman then made his way to another dance studio, where a second shooting was averted. ABC News obtained these photos, which show an employee wrestling away the gunman’s weapon before scaring him off. Authorities are now calling that man a hero.

The gunman remained at large until Sunday afternoon when police tracked him down to a van in this strip mall parking lot. Inside the van, police say they found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Sound: “the suspect has been identified as Huu Can Tran, he is a 72 year old male Asian.”

As of right now, police say they don’t know the motive for the shooting. Police sources told a local magazine the gunman was “looking for his wife” and believe this may be a case of domestic violence.

This all took place in Monterey Park, California, home to one of America’s largest Asian communities, and it all took place just as the community was wrapping up a Lunar New Year celebration. The Lunar New Year is a holiday that’s celebrated widely in China, Vietnam and other Asian countries.

Today, the community is heartbroken.

Sound: “My kids took art lessons, we come down here for food all the time, we see elders walking around all the time. This has been a safe neighborhood for them to walk around and have community. Historic Taiwanese, Chinese community. So, to see this happen in this place is shattering.”

This tragedy comes as anti-Asian hate crimes have been on the rise in the U.S., which increased by 339% in 2021, and Saturday’s mass shooting was the deadliest since last year’s tragedy in Uvalde, Texas.

According to the gun violence archive, so far in 2023 there have already been 36 mass shootings – which they define as shootings in which 4 or more people were injured or killed.

Headlines

Jonathan: Here’s what else is making news right now.

Sound: Manchin:: “Oh I think he should have a lot of regrets… We’re all human, we make mistakes”

Jonathan: That’s West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat – criticizing President Biden for how he’s handled classified documents. The FBI found another batch of classified documents at the president’s home in Delaware over the weekend.

Jonathan: The man in this photo caught putting his feet on Nancy Pelosi’s desk during the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th, 2021 was just convicted on all counts stemming from that day including obstructing an official proceeding.

And – ever wanted to live at the infamous Hype House? Well, now you can… it was just put up for rent for a cool $50,000 a month.

Fair warning though – the landlord said the hype house crew caused $300k worth of damages before leaving.

Actor Jeremy Renner Recovers from Horrific Accident

And finally today we’ve got some good news. A Marvel superhero appears to be making a remarkable recovery after a serious accident. You may know Jeremy Renner as the actor who plays Hawkeye for Marvel.

On New Year’s Day, Jeremy was apparently trying to remove a family member’s car from a snowbank using a snowplow near his home in Nevada. After he got out of the driver’s seat, the plow kept moving and ran him over.

He was taken to a local hospital by helicopter where he received emergency surgery and was in critical condition for several days.

The accident broke over 30 bones in Jeremy’s body, but over the weekend, Jeremy reported he’s on the mend. He wrote on Instagram that his “morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular New Years,” and thanked his fans and followers for all of their support.

Many actors, including some of his Marvel costars have offered him words of support, like Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans who asked, “has anyone even checked on the snow cat?”

Docs say Jeremy still has a long road to recovery ahead of him, but he is thrilled with the progress he’s made so far.
