Trump creeps toward war, but both sides push back

Two visionaries and two scumbags

As the U.S. edges closer to joining Israel’s unprovoked war against Iran, something unusual is happening in Washington: Democrats and Republicans are actually agreeing—on staying out of it.

THE LATEST: Yesterday, Trump called Iran’s supreme leader an “easy target” but claimed there were “no plans to take him out—at least right now.” He wants an “unconditional surrender.”

  • Meanwhile, the U.S. is moving more military assets into the region as Israel and Iran continue trading fire overnight.

THE PUSHBACK: In a rare moment of bipartisan sanity, lawmakers on both the far left and far right are pushing to avoid another endless war in the Middle East.

  • Squad Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib are backing a bill from Republican Rep. Thomas Massie that would require Congressional approval for military action.

  • In the Senate, Bernie Sanders introduced his own bill to stop the march to war, vowing to do “everything he can” to keep the U.S. out.

And in maybe the strangest twist of all—we even agree with two far-right scumbags: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Tucker Carlson, who are both warning Trump not to escalate.

BIG PICTURE: We’ve seen this movie before. The U.S. invades, the region is devastated, and defense contractors rake in billions.

  • Iran isn’t a threat to you or your family. It’s only a threat to fossil fuel companies, and a huge opportunity for weapons makers and the multinational corporations that bankroll both parties.

Both parties agree: we don’t want a sequel.

YESTERDAY’S QUESTION: Yesterday we asked, do you think Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani can win the NYC mayor's race? The results were overwhelming.

Skytarot voted no: “The moneyed class will rise up to defeat him with large amounts of dark money. If this doesn’t work, he will be targeted for smear campaigns and outright violence if it looks like he could win.”

FSNKP was more hopeful, and voted yes: “People are tired of the rich raising prices and buying up housing and businesses, and getting tax breaks, while the poor get poorer and struggle to make ends meet.“

Vignali also voted yes: “He is just what New York needs. He is someone who wants to help the working class. Wish more people like him would run for other offices.”

GOP targets student loan relief—again

Republicans are pushing to eliminate key protections for struggling borrowers—blocking student loan payment pauses during job loss or economic hardship. Their "One Big Beautiful Bill" would force millions to repay even while unemployed, with interest still piling up. Critics warn it could double the number of people in default. Full story from AP.

Medicaid’s popularity soars—as Republicans move to slash it

New polling shows Medicaid is more popular than ever—even with Republican voters. But that hasn’t stopped GOP lawmakers in the Senate from pushing nearly $800 billion in cuts as part of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” threatening coverage for millions. Critics warn it could devastate rural hospitals, seniors, and disabled Americans. Full story from NPR.

Senate passes crypto bill—but ignores Trump’s $57 million conflict

The Senate just passed the GENIUS Act to regulate ‘stablecoins,’ a new form of crypto currency. There was one glaring omission: President Trump’s massive crypto holdings. While members of Congress would be banned from profiting off stablecoins, the president is exempt—despite Trump earning over $57 million from token sales tied to a project his administration supports. Elizabeth Warren said the bill creates a “super highway” for Trump corruption. Full story from AP.

Chicago’s affordable housing plan is a blueprint to follow

Critics are hailing Chicago’s progressive mayor, Brandon Johnson, for rejecting the failed developer-first approach to housing. He’s bringing the city back in as a builder. His “Missing Middle” plan puts public land and funding toward co-producing affordable homes, offering a bold alternative to decades of deregulated, profit-driven housing policy. Other cities should take notes. Full story from Governing.com.

Americans want a less chaotic economy—even if it costs more

A new global survey finds that most people—including Americans—would gladly trade some spending power for a stable, recession-free economy. That blows up decades of economic theory claiming consumers only care about growth and inflation. Turns out, most of us just want predictability—even if the “free market” can’t deliver it. IN DEPTH

Bernie declares war on Democratic billionaires

At a moment when Americans are repulsed by Elon Musk’s buying power and influence from Republicans—Bernie Sanders is turning the tables on his own party.

  • He’s calling on Democrats to ban all dark money and super PACs from primaries.

DRIVING THE NEWS: In a letter to Democratic leaders, Sanders and seven other senators are demanding the party “clean our own house” by cutting ties with billionaire-backed outside groups.

  • They point to super PACs funded by right-wing billionaires—like Musk—and pro-Israel megadonors who spent millions last cycle to take down progressive candidates like Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush, and Summer Lee.

The senators say that if Democrats don’t break with these funders, they’ll lose the credibility to take on Trump’s oligarch agenda.

ZOOM OUT: The letter, sent to Chuck Schumer and DNC Chair Ken Martin, urges Democrats to voluntarily reject dark money while pushing long-term reforms to reverse Citizens United.

  • Signers include Elizabeth Warren, Peter Welch, Tina Smith, and Chris Van Hollen—many of whom have seen firsthand how wealthy donors dominate primary elections and drown out grassroots voices.

BIG PICTURE: The Democratic brand is sinking—and Sanders knows why. While Republicans lean into authoritarianism, “centrist” Democrats too often lean on billionaires.

  • That’s why Bernie is criss-crossing the country with his “Fighting Oligarchy” tour—drawing thousands to rallies and recruiting populist candidates in red and blue states alike.

WHAT’S NEXT: No one expects party elites to give up their cash flow overnight. But with public trust collapsing, Sanders is daring Democrats to prove they’re not just the other party of the rich.

Because if the left won’t stand up to billionaires—who will?
