America’s latest mass shooters share one thing in common

The alleged Michigan church attacker was a Trump supporter (SURPRISE)

Two more apparent right-wing extremists attacked Americans over the weekend—and the reaction from their instigators is telling.

WHAT’S GOING ON: On Saturday, a 40-year-old Marine veteran opened fire on a waterfront bar in the southeast corner of North Carolina, killing three people and physically wounding five others.

A little over 12 hours later, a different 40-year-old Marine veteran, stormed a Mormon church service in Michigan with a truck full of improvised explosive devices and then opened fire on the crowd with a semiautomatic rifle.

That attack and subsequent fire left four people dead and eight others physically injured.

THE CONNECTION: The alleged attackers, aside from being the same age and veterans, also share another disturbing connection. Both were mentally ill, and both held extreme right-wing beliefs.

The suspect in North Carolina alleged that he was the victim of a "civil conspiracy" and had been trafficked by the LGBTQ community as "a weapon of mass destruction.”

Meanwhile, the suspect in Michigan had a re-elect Trump sign in his front yard, and was photographed wearing a “make liberals cry again” shirt.

The Michigan suspect also held extremist, anti-Mormon views, even allegedly calling church members "the antichrist" a week before the attack.

OF COURSE: The truth that the Michigan attacker was right-wing didn’t stop Trump from issuing his typical anti-progressive dog whistle. Less than two hours after the attack, Trump posted on his failing social media platform, “This appears to be yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States of America.”

BIG PICTURE: For years now, study after study—from social scientists, the federal government, and independent think tanks—has found the same pattern: the overwhelming majority of political violence in America comes from the far right.

Attacks inspired by white nationalism, Christian nationalism, and anti-government extremism vastly outnumber those tied to the left.

And yet, Trump and his allies continue to insist the real threat is “Antifa” or “radical progressives,” even as their own supporters wage deadly attacks in churches, nightclubs, synagogues, grocery stores, and now waterfront bars.

By recasting America’s most persistent danger as something else entirely, Trump isn’t just lying—he’s mobilizing the federal government against his political enemies and enemies of the ruling class while giving cover to the movement that fuels this violence.

BOTTOM LINE: The result is a chilling feedback loop: the more right-wing extremists attack, the more Trump points the finger at the left, and the more his base feels justified in escalating.

What’s at stake is not just public safety, but whether Americans will be able to clearly name and confront the violence that is right in front of them.

🗞️ Making News

Trump edges U.S. toward shutdown while scheming mass federal layoffs

The government will shut down at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday if Trump and the Democrats can’t reach a deal to protect health care while funding the government. Instead, the White House is preparing mass firings of federal workers during the shutdown—a union-busting power grab that would cripple public services while shielding Trump’s corporate priorities. Democrats say the standoff exposes a stark divide in values: Republicans holding the government hostage to enrich the wealthy at the expense of everyone else. Full story from The Washington Post. Trump and Netanyahu push Gaza ceasefire plan while genocide continues

President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu unveiled a 20-point ceasefire plan that Trump hailed as “beyond very close” to ending the war in Gaza. But the proposal still excludes Hamas from governance, keeps Israel’s occupation intact, and comes as a U.N. inquiry has formally concluded Israel committed genocide—killing more than 66,000 Palestinians, including 17,000 children. Trump is touting the plan as a diplomatic victory, but critics warn it’s a U.S.-backed cover for continued ethnic cleansing and authoritarian control of Gaza. Full story from CNN.

YouTube to pay $24.5 million to settle lawsuit brought by Trump

Another corporation has caved to Trump: YouTube will pay $24.5 million to settle his lawsuit over being banned after January 6. Most of the money goes straight into Trump’s pockets or a vanity “ballroom” project at the White House, adding to more than $80 million he’s extracted from corporations since retaking power. The payouts show how easily Big Tech bends to authoritarian pressure, treating Trump’s demands as a cheap price for protection while workers and the public get nothing. Trump’s immigration dragnet is sweeping up more and more U.S. citizens

Trump’s expanded war on migrants of color has ensnared dozens of U.S. citizens—many of them Latino men—who have been stopped, detained, and even jailed despite repeatedly proving their citizenship. With the Supreme Court greenlighting racial profiling and DHS pushing armed raids, Americans are being treated as “illegal” in their own country. The chaos shows how Trump’s war on immigrants has morphed into a broader assault on civil rights, eroding constitutional protections for anyone who doesn’t fit his vision of who belongs. MAGA melts down as Bad Bunny tapped for Super Bowl halftime show

The NFL’s choice of Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny to headline the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show has triggered a MAGA tantrum, with right-wing pundits furious that a vocal Trump critic is taking center stage. Bad Bunny, who has blasted Trump’s deportation machine and uplifted immigrant voices in his music, framed the performance as a victory for his people and culture. The rage from Trump’s base reveals their fear of a stage where Latinx pride, resistance, and art will be broadcast to hundreds of millions worldwide. Full story from Mediaite.

🗳️ Yesterday’s poll results

Yesterday we asked, do you think Trump is smart?

Tom voted no and summed it up nicely: “Is he good at playing to his audience? Yes. Is he smart? No! Smart leaders surround themselves with competent people who are willing to challenge them. Smart leaders read. Smart leaders change their minds when new information becomes available. Smart leaders take care of themselves physically. No, he’s not smart.”

Turnerma also voted no: “He's ignorant and refuses to learn. He surrounds himself with evil self-serving ignorant people, like himself, and does what they say. He's an evil puppet and America is paying the price.”

Greg was one of the few to vote yes and said: “Trump is smart enough to hire sycophants that support his every wish and they are backed up by Corporate money moguls.”
