TOP STORY

Israel strikes a Gaza hospital twice, killing at least 20, including journalists and rescuers

Israeli forces bombed Gaza’s Nasser Hospital on Monday—twice—killing at least 20 people, including five journalists and emergency workers, according to Gaza health officials and international press outlets.

THE DETAILS: The first strike hit the upper floors of the hospital, killing two. As journalists and medics rushed to help, Israel launched a second strike on the stairwell, killing 18 more—including AP journalist Mariam Dagga, who days earlier had reported on starving children at the same facility.

Reuters also confirmed one of its reporters died while filming a live shot. Video shows journalists climbing stairs to the site before a massive explosion cut the footage. Around 80 more people were wounded.

BIG PICTURE: This attack adds to a horrifying trend. Since October 2023, Israel has killed at least 189 Palestinian journalists and more than 1,500 health workers, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists and the U.N.

Hospitals—protected under international law—have been repeatedly bombed.

Israel called the hospital massacre a “tragic mishap,” claiming it was targeting a Hamas camera on the roof. But press outlets note reporters had long used the same rooftop for live shots.

PRESS UNDER ATTACK: The Associated Press and Reuters demanded an explanation, writing: “We are outraged that independent journalists were among the victims.” The Foreign Press Association urged Israel to stop “its abhorrent practice of targeting journalists.”

International leaders condemned the strike. Trump offered little more than a shrug. First saying he “wasn’t aware” of the attack, Trump later downplayed it and mused vaguely about a “conclusive ending” in Gaza. Translation: he’s greenlighting more bloodshed.

THE HUMAN TOLL: The Gaza Health Ministry says that at least 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since the genocide began, half of them women and children.

Doctors inside Nasser Hospital described “chaos, disbelief and fear” as patients with IV drips were dragged across blood-soaked hallways.

WHY IT MATTERS: Bombing hospitals and killing journalists isn’t just a “mishap.” It’s a war crime. And as Trump signals tacit approval, America’s credibility on human rights erodes further—while ordinary Palestinians pay the ultimate price.

Democrats erupt as Trump tries to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook

Trump’s attempt to oust Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook is an authoritarian attack on the independence of the central bank, long a safeguard against political meddling. Democrats blasted the move as unconstitutional and a blatant power grab to manipulate the economy for his own political gain—part of a broader campaign to bend federal agencies to serve capital and his own approval rating. DNC Chair: Democrats can’t keep ‘bringing a pencil to a knife fight’

Democratic National Committee chair Ken Martin urged his party to abandon its habit of “playing by the rules” while the GOP rigs elections at the party’s annual meeting Monday. Framing redistricting battles in Texas and California as part of Trump’s wider assault on democracy and voting rights, Martin called on Democrats to fight back with equal force to stop Republicans from entrenching minority rule on behalf of the wealthy and powerful. Trump signs order to criminalize flag burning in defiance of Supreme Court

In a direct assault on free speech, Trump ordered federal prosecutors to criminally charge protesters who burn American flags, sidestepping a 1989 Supreme Court ruling that protects the act as political expression. The move highlights his authoritarian drive to punish dissent and control public anger at a system that already silences marginalized voices while shielding the powerful. Florida defies court order, refuses to shut down ‘Alligator Alcatraz’

In open defiance of a federal judge, Florida announced it will keep Trump’s notorious “Alligator Alcatraz” migrant jail running despite a court order to dismantle it. The swamp-built detention camp—already condemned for inhumane conditions and massive taxpayer costs—shows how Trump and his allies will trample the law, climate protections, and human dignity alike to enforce their cruel anti-immigrant agenda. Trump wants to kill cashless bail, doubling down on criminalizing poverty

By ordering an end to cashless bail in D.C. and threatening to strip funds from states that use it, Trump is pushing a policy designed to cage poor and Black people pretrial while the wealthy walk free. Experts say the move won’t reduce crime, but will deepen inequality—funneling thousands more into overcrowded jails as Trump guts social programs that actually prevent violence. Is Donald Trump a socialist?

In a buzzy new piece for The Atlantic, David A. Graham argues that Donald Trump has embraced a “right-wing” version of socialism.

It builds on another viral piece from May in The Dispatch, which alleged the same thing. But what these capitalists writers fail to grasp is…
