TOP STORY

‘60 Minutes’ Investigation Censored by CBS Leaks Online

The 60 Minutes deportation segment that CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss censored just hours before it was set to air has surfaced online after a Canadian outlet accidentally posted it.

And surprise: it's solid journalism that documents torture at Trump's deportation prison.

WHAT'S GOING ON: The segment, which features interviews with Venezuelan deportees sent to El Salvador's brutal CECOT prison, appeared on Global TV's app in Canada before being taken down.

The report includes testimony from Luis Munoz Pinto, who described being beaten and sexually assaulted despite having no criminal record—he was simply awaiting asylum proceedings when customs officers detained him.

THE DETAILS: The 60 Minutes piece cites Human Rights Watch statistics showing nearly half of those the U.S. sent to CECOT had no criminal history. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi said the show reviewed ICE data that "confirms the findings of Human Rights Watch."

The segment includes a clip of human trashabg/Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defending the practice by calling deportees "heinous murderers" and "rapists"—a characterization directly contradicted by the data. The Department of Homeland Security declined to be interviewed.

BUT BUT BUT: Weiss claimed the segment didn't "advance the topic" and needed more—specifically, an interview with Stephen Miller, the architect of Trump's deportation policy.

So let's get this straight: the administration refused to participate, and that became the justification for killing a story about their human rights abuses? That's not editorial standards. That's giving subjects veto power over coverage.

Mike Wallace is rolling over in his grave right now.

WHY IT MATTERS: FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez called the decision "deeply alarming," warning it amounts to giving Trump "veto power over critical reporting."

And now that the segment has leaked, any future changes will be scrutinized against the original—making CBS's capitulation a matter of public record. 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi already told colleagues this wasn't an editorial decision but a "political" one amounting to corporate interference.

BOTTOM LINE: The segment is out. The documentation of torture exists. And CBS News just taught every authoritarian how to kill unfavorable coverage: refuse to participate, then watch the network spike it for you.

GO DEEPER: Watch the segment here. (While it’s still up!)
