Bernie gets real about the Democratic Party

Bernie Sanders slammed the Democratic Party as "a threat to democracy" in a podcast released yesterday.

THE DETAILS: In a 90-minute interview on the Flagrant podcast, Sanders tore into the party’s establishment, accusing it (again) of ignoring working-class voters and undermining democratic processes in the 2024 election.

  • Speaking with hosts Andrew Schulz and Akaash Singh, Sanders agreed with the idea that the Democratic Party has lost touch with everyday Americans.

He criticized the party's wealthy donors and campaign consultants, whom he called “out of touch with reality.”

  • “They make a whole lot of money in campaigns, and the working class is ignored,” Sanders said.

Sanders also blamed these same consultants for Kamala Harris’ loss, saying he had “begged” her team to avoid tying her campaign too closely to Biden’s unpopular presidency.

WHAT HE SAID: “You’ve got a Democratic establishment which is funded by wealthy people,” Sanders said, expressing frustration that even after the 2024 defeat, party elites “still won’t listen.”

  • When the host claimed that the Democratic primary process is rigged and that the party is a threat to democracy, Bernie agreed, saying, “I’m not going to argue with that.”

WHY IT MATTERS: Sanders’ blunt criticism comes as Democrats scramble to regain momentum after losing the White House, and he pulls the biggest crowds of his career.

Bernie’s remarks are a sharp rebuke of a party he once tried to lead—and highlight the deep fractures between establishment, corporate-sponsored Democrats and grassroots-supported progressives heading into 2026.

BIG PICTURE: The senator’s comments echo a growing frustration among young and working-class voters who have been sidelined by both major parties.

As Democratic leaders continue to alienate their base, figures like Sanders and AOC may be the only ones still speaking to their concerns.

Yesterday we asked, should billionaires exist? The people have spoken.

Bluroz voted yes and said, “Some, like Bill Gates, do so much good with their money. But we need to tax them to pay for healthcare, green living etc. for the good of society.”

But, as Joan pointed out, “Most do not use their enormous wealth for the common good but just greedily want more and more to satisfy their lust for power. And this is at the expense of all the rest of us. They already pay far less than their share in taxes and now will receive more cuts from a corrupt administration.”

Joyanna also voted no. “No one should be able to hoard that much wealth due to unfair taxation on the working class. The wealth discrepancies of America are gross with wages being repressed as the cost of everything inflates. The stupid tariffs only increase this unnecessary expense.”

Democratic congresswoman charged with assault over incident at ICE facility

The Trump administration is now doing what it claimed had happened to it—waging lawfare against its political opponents. They claim Rep. LaMonica McIver assaulted federal law enforcement in a protest outside an illegally operating ICE facility in New Jersey last week. McIver says it’s an attempt to chill legislative oversight. Justice Department paying $5 million to family of insurrectionist killed on Jan. 6

Despite the fact she was trying to overthrow the government on January 6, 2021, Trump’s Justice Department has agreed to pay Ashli Babbitt’s family $5 million of taxpayer’s money to settle a wrongful death suit. Trump has praised the insurrectionist—and in our view, a traitor to the Republic—as a “hero.” Full story from Newsweek.

Supreme Court allows Trump to strip protections from 350,000 Venezuelans

One step forward—two steps back. The court has overturned a ruling from a lower court that protected migrants from being sent back to their native countries because of natural disaster or civil strife. One lawyer called it the “single largest action in modern American history stripping any group of non-citizens of immigration status.” Full story from the AP.

Only 2 migrants sent to El Salvador concentration camp had a criminal record

Meanwhile, in case you needed more proof that mass deportations are a terrible idea—a new study from a libertarian think tank proves just how reckless they’ve become. Of the Venezuelan men the Trump administration shipped off to a brutal concentration camp in El Salvador, only two had any criminal record at all. And at least 50 had entered the U.S. legally—with visas, parole, or refugee status. Full story from The Hill.

Netanyahu vows to ‘take control’ of Gaza as UK, France and Canada threaten action against Israel

At least someone is standing up to Israel’s ethnic cleansing in the Gaza strip. Britain, France and Canada all attacked Israel’s expansion of its genocide as disproportionate and threatened a “concrete” response if Israel’s campaign continues. Israel has refused to let in barely any food or water for the past 11 weeks. Full story from The Guardian.

IN DEPTH

How much is a worker’s life worth?

Victor Gomez and two fascists

A worker’s death at a Tesla factory is raising questions and drawing outrage after the company was fined a measly amount—despite an investigation finding the company was failing to protect workers.

WHAT HAPPENED: Late last summer, Victor Gomez went to work as a subcontracted electrician at a Tesla factory outside Austin, Texas.

  • But when the 46-year-old father of seven went to inspect an electrical panel he thought was de-energized but was not—he was electrocuted.

He died before paramedics could get there.

AND THEN: An investigation by the federal agency tasked with overseeing workplace safety, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), found that company failed to adequately protect workers from electrical hazards.

THE BACKLASH: Victor’s family and workers’ rights advocates that amount is not nearly enough. Tesla is worth over $1 trillion, and $50k isn’t enough to force the company to care about workers’ safety.

  • In fact, as Rep. Greg Casar pointed out, Elon Musk and Tesla made that fine back in nine minutes—from federal contracts alone.

MEANWHILE: Musk has been using his position in the federal government to gut agencies tasked with keeping the public safe—but dare put the brakes on oligarchs’ profits.

  • OSHA’s inspector workforce has been reduced to its lowest level in history, with only 761 compliance officers nationwide—down from 952 at the start of Trump’s first term (not a whole lot to even begin with).

Wanting to go even further, Trump’s 2026 budget proposal cuts Labor Department funding by nearly 35%, severely limiting OSHA’s ability to inspect workplaces and enforce safety standards.

BIG PICTURE: The MAGA agenda prioritizes corporate profits over worker safety.

  • By dismantling OSHA and other regulatory bodies, they’re removing critical protections that safeguard American workers. This erosion of oversight not only endangers lives but also undermines the principle that every worker deserves a safe workplace.

As these policies continue to unfold, the question remains: How much is a worker’s life worth to those in power?

To Trump and Musk? Not much.
